Description

The platforming prototype was created for a 24-hour digital design challenge in which the prompt was "Out of Control". With this in mind, the idea behind this project was to create a platforming game in which the obstacles and puzzles were 'out of control' in the sense that they were either impossible or extremely difficult to maneuver without the player altering the state of the game.

Thus, the key mechanic of this prototype was the ability to alter time. I only managed to implement the ability to slow down global time in the game and would love to explore more time-based mechanics in future.

Development

The main selling point of a platformer is the mechanics. I used the Unreal Engine 5 base template for a first-person shooter. From there I added a crouch, sprint, and the slow time buttons with some visual appeal such as the FOV change when sprinting and the blue hue when time is slowed down.

All assets were blocked out using Unreal Engine 5's basic modelling system, the exceptions being the water and textures. The water is from an experimental plugin on UE5, and the textures are from an asset pack.
